1- The Noble Quran's Claim in Noble Verse 21:32:
The Noble Quran is filled with scientific statements and notions. These are statements of Allah Almighty describing how He created things on earth and in the Universe. What's most amazing is that all of these scientific statements and notions had been proven to be in perfect agreement with science and our modern-day scientific discoveries. Allah Almighty made the Noble Quran be Prophet Muhammad's (peace be upon him) Everlasting Divine Miracle and proof for Prophethood. The Holy Book certainly stood the test of time 1,500 years ago with Its Claims, Prophecies and Miraculous language eloquence, and it does again and again in our day today with Its overwhelming agreement with science and discoveries that were not known to man 1,500 years ago.
With this said, to a simple bedouin such as our Beloved and Blessed Prophet, Role Model and Teacher, Muhammad, Peace, Mercy and Blessings be upon him, who lived in Arabia 1,500 years ago, looking up in the sky during the day and seeing it blue with white clouds, and looking at it at night and seeing it black with bright dots of stars, wouldn't think in a million years (if he were to live in his same status) that there is an actual protective layer (what we call today the Ozone layer) covering the entire planet earth!!!
Ozone is a roof, clouds aren't:
Obviously, the Noble Verses below are not talking about clouds, because clouds are scattered in the air, while Allah Almighty Said that He made the sky (Ozone) a "raised" and "protected roof"! A roof is a one solid piece that covers, shelters and protects the things under it.
Let us look at what Allah Almighty Said in the Noble Quran:

As we clearly and indisputably see, Allah Almighty created our sky/heaven to be a protective and protected ceiling for us.

Here we indisputably see how Allah Almighty called our sky a lifted ceiling, and/or elevated cover.

Here we see Allah Almighty speaking of a building's roof falling down on the people. This means that the roof is:
1- A physical protection from above - in this case protection from rain, wind and burning sun rays all coming from above.
2- Is located above us.
So when Allah Almighty described our sky (Ozone layer) as a protected and elevated roof, then there is no question that He, the Almighty, referred to our protective and well-guarded Ozone layer protecting and guarding us from the dangers of space!

As we clearly and indisputably see, محفوظ means in all of the English translations above guarded, protected and preserved.
Allah Almighty in Noble Verse 21:32 above Said that our Ozone layer protects the earth!
